Fad Or New Classic? The Rise Of Mocktails & A Natural High

Fad Or New Classic? The Rise Of Mocktails & A Natural High

The concept of mocktails dates back to the 1860s when they were called "Temperance Drinks" by Jerry Thomas, author of Bar Tender's Guide. Thomas’ book included 15 alcohol-free cocktails.

Mocktails naturally became more popular during the prohibition era of 1920 to 1933, when selling alcohol became illegal across the U.S.

Bartenders, seeing empty glasses and a crowd thirsty for something, got creative. They started mixing drinks with fruit juices, syrups, and sodas. These concoctions might have lacked alcohol, but they definitely delivered on flavor and presentation.

When prohibition ended in 1933, much of Eliot Ness' hard work went down the drain with the mocktails that were born from it. Fast forward to present day and mocktails are back. And now with a more sustainable interest than before.

Today, younger millennials and Gen-Zers are trending more mindful and purpose-driven living than generations before them.

Many embrace thrifting, which lowers the pollution caused by fast fashion. They’re driving less, eating clean foods sourced from sustainable farms, and opting for a more plant-based diet.

They’ve heartily embraced the mocktail as a socially-acceptable alternative to intoxication.

The mocktail movement has been gradually creating a foothold in the culture of health conscious living, reflecting broader societal changes toward mindfulness, health, sustainability, and personal responsibility. Arguably, this movement reflects the now decades-long work of programs like D.A.R.E. or by organizations like MADD.

Has a swath of America’s youth given up the pleasures of mild intoxication in doing so? Not necessarily.

Introducing “A Natural High”

The idea of getting a natural high from certain ingredients revolves around the concept of stimulating the body's chemical responses (think dopamine or serotonin) that enhance mood, energy or relaxation.

Foods and drinks like chocolate, chili peppers, and beverages containing ingredients like kava, matcha, or ginseng can offer a gentle boost to mood or energy levels without the negative side effects that come with intoxication. Yeah, no hangover!

When we drink a couple cocktails, the activity of the GABA neurotransmitter is increased, resulting in a sense of calm, and releasing dopamine which gives us a pleasurable reward…for many people, a couple drinks feels good.

The downside is the decline in our cognitive and motor functions, along with dehydration and the potential for addiction. Any amount of alcohol results in impairment.

Caffeine works differently, by blocking adenosine receptors, preventing drowsiness and releasing adrenaline, increasing our energy and alertness. The drawbacks are the jitters, anxiety, and crashes once it wears off since it's essentially tricking our body into thinking it has more energy than it does.

Intoxication, hangover, energy spike, then energy crash – more and more people are seeking a different experience.

Many are turning to natural ingredients that offer similar benefits without the downsides.

Mocktails aren't just a fad. They've become a health-conscious alternative to traditional cocktails. With ingredients like kava, matcha, and ginseng, you get the mild vibe you want and still wake up feeling like a champ.

We say cheers to that!

Try These In A Tasty Mocktail Recipe

These five ingredients can lift dopamine and serotonin levels, promote GABA activity to elevate mood, and induce a relaxing effect similar to alcohol. Other alternatives can provide sustained alertness without the eventual crash our body goes through after drinking a lot of coffee.

Kava

How it works: Kava contains compounds called kavalactones, which are known to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety by modulating GABA receptors in the brain, a lot like alcohol does but without impairing cognitive function.

Benefits: Kava is often used to relieve stress, promote calmness, and enhance social interaction, providing a mild euphoric effect without the hangover.

Matcha

How it works: Matcha is rich in L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and mental clarity without drowsiness. Combined with caffeine, L-theanine provides a balanced, sustained energy boost that enhances focus without the jittery side effects typical of coffee.

Benefits: Matcha is ideal for those seeking to improve concentration, alertness, and overall cognitive performance while maintaining a calm state of mind.

Yerba Mate

How it works: Yerba mate contains a unique blend of caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline, which together provide a stimulant effect similar to caffeine but smoother and longer-lasting. It stimulates the central nervous system and enhances mood and energy levels.

Benefits: Yerba mate offers a natural, gentle energy boost that can improve physical endurance and mental clarity, making it a popular choice for those looking for an alternative to coffee or energy drinks.

Ginseng

How it works: Ginseng is an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body resist stressors and maintain balance. It enhances energy by promoting the function of the adrenal glands and improving the body’s stress response, which can help in maintaining stamina and mental focus.

Benefits: Ginseng is commonly used to combat fatigue, improve cognitive function, and boost the immune system, providing sustained energy and mental sharpness without the crash associated with stimulants like caffeine.

Maca

How it works: Maca is known for its ability to balance hormones and improve mood and energy levels. It works by nourishing the endocrine system, which can lead to enhanced physical stamina, mood stability, and stress resilience.

Benefits: Maca is often used to increase vitality, endurance, and libido. It can provide a natural mood lift and energy boost, making it a great addition to beverages intended to enhance overall well-being.
